A staff survey regarding the Zane North Character Education Initiative produced the following results:
- Can character education work at all grade levels? 90% strongly agree; 10% agree
- Character Education should not be taught as a subject in itself, but rather to integrate within the regular curriculum. 90% strongly agree; 10% agree
- Our students cooperate with each other. 40% strongly agree; 60% agree
- Students and teachers talk about character. 85% strongly agree; 15% agree
- Students and teachers reflect upon developing habits of good character. 80% strongly agree; 20% agree
- Teachers at this school respect one another. 100 % strongly agree;
- Teachers at this school work well together. 95% strongly agree; 5% agree
- I recommend that the district continue to implement the Character Education Program. 90% strongly agree; 10% agree
Staff comments when asked: “What if any changes have you seen in students due to your instruction of character education?”
- Much happier atmosphere, better place to come to daily.
- Students are much nicer to each other!
- Kinder and more compassionate interaction between students.
- Positive interaction with peers.
- Open sharing rather than aggressive behaviors.
- Students have fewer conflicts amongst themselves and are more respectful and friendly towards all staff in the building.
- Many of the students have become more aware of the things they do and say to one another.
- Less discipline problems.
- Compliments are more easily given.
Regarding the Character Education Initiative Teachers state:
- The film clips definitely help the students think about and discuss the character traits
- Students at this school are knowledgeable about character traits and incorporate them into everyday situations.
- It is used throughout every classroom and is reinforced in all areas. It is reinforced throughout every aspect.
- I personally have seen improvement in student behaviors especially during instructional activities.
- I have seen interaction between students improve on the playground and in the lunchroom.
- The strength of this initiative is that it is “contagious. It spreads quickly!”
- The strengths of the program lie in hand of the teachers. Since they support it – it works.
